Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher learning in China. It created the first 10,000 ton-class ship, the first nuclear submarine, the first hovercraft, the first hydrofoil, the first independently designed fighter jet, the first carrier rocket and the first artificial satellite in New China. It performed the first mitral leaflet separation, the first successful orthotopic liver transplantation and the first operation that saved a patient with extensive burns. It also founded the first university translation and publishing organization and contributed the largest number of local documents. All these achievements are the result of the efforts and wisdom of the SJTU faculty, students and alumni. Since the reform and opening up, a number of young alumni have shown their talent and attracted attention in various industries around the world.
